Famous Indian cricket fan Sudhir Gautam was at the receiving end after India lost the ODI series here in Bangladesh as a mob of unruly local fans bullied him. A couple of policemen came to his rescue, only to see some of those fans returning to chase the auto-rickshaw Sudhir hired to get to safety. After the incident came to light, Mirpur Police assured Sudhir of his safety and provided him with cover for the rest of his stay. “As soon as I left the stadium, people mobbed me and started snatching the Tricolour. Some pulled my shirt, some tried to touch my pony-tail. I had to stay inside a salon, where I get my hair done, with its shutter down. Two policemen then came to my rescue and they escorted me to a CNG [auto-rickshaw],” Sudhir said. The next day, Sudhir said, the Deputy Commissioner and two other top police officials met him and also deputed a couple of policemen for his safety.
“I want to thank the Bangladesh police who came to my rescue. I have been provided security,” he said, and then went on to urge the fans to not get involved in such behaviour.
