Irom Sharmila released after 14 years; commits to continue fast

Irom-SharmilaIrom Sharmila, famously known as the ‘Iron lady of Manipur’ walks free today after 14 years, as she has been released from the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital, Imphal on Wednesday.

The Human Rights activist, Irom, has been on an indefinite hunger strike since 14 years, protesting to repeal the so-called draconian law ‘Armed Forces Special Protection Actor AFSPA’ from the state.

After being released, she addressed to her commitment to continue her fast and her stand on AFSPA.

“I want my demands met. The draconian law must end”, said Irom talking to the reporters outside the hospital.

She is released after a Sessions Court order in Imphal.

She was charge-sheeted under the section 309 of Indian Penal Code for allegedly attempting suicide.
