Jagannath Yatra on a grand-scale

635728183051547766This decade’s top rathayatra began on a grand scale in Puri streets with the presiding deity Jagannatha Swamy, flanked by celestial consorts Balabadra and Subhdra atop Garuda Vahanam, gave darshan to over 30 lakhs pilgrims who arrived from across the country. The 9-day annual celebrations will end on Aashada Shukla Dasami after beginning on Shuklapaksha Vidiya in Aashada month. The 16-wheeled chariot with a height of 44.2 feet was constructed with 832 wooden pieces and decorated with red, yellow clothes. The celestial idols of Jagannatha Swamy, Balabadra and Subhdra were taken out for rathayatra on three different chariots. Every day the 2-km rathayatra is held till the Gundicha temple. The same yatra is also called Gudicha yatra, Gosaiyatra, Navadiya yatra and Devasthan yatra. The Odisha government made elaborate arrangements. Free buses ply from Malatipur bus station to Puri and 216 special trains from important areas are transporting pilgrims. Besides, 30 temporary sheds for pilgrims’ rest and 12 health centres were built. Two days back the security officers took control of the city for arranging tight security for conduct of the rathayatra on a peaceful note.
