Jat reservation bill gets through

Jat-reservation-bill-gets-tAs the deadline to make the Bill is over, the Haryana cabinet today cleared the bill that proposes to provide reservation to five communities, including the politically-dominant Jat community.

According to the Bill, the cabinet has created a separate category in Backward Communities-

“BC-3” for Jats and provided 10 per cent reservation in educational opportunities and jobs (Class III and Class IV jobs).

Till now only two categories- BC-1 and BC-2 are there with 16% and 11% reservation respectively.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had said earlier that the state government would introduce a new bill in the assembly’s budget session for reservation to five communities, namely Jat, Jat Sikh, Tyagi, Bishnoi and Ror.

Khattar had made it clear that the existing 27 percent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the state would not be disturbed. The OBC community is opposing inclusion of Jats in their category for reservation.

A five-member committee under the chairmanship of the chief secretary was formed earlier this month to prepare draft of the Bill to grant reservation under the ambit of constitution.
