Judgment on Beas Tragedy

BIYASThe High Court of Himachal Pradesh ruled on Saturday that Rs. 20 lakhs compensation be paid  to the parents of the 24 Telugu students drowned in the Beas river on June 18, 2014. The High Court in its judgment said that in addition to the compensation of Rs. 5 lakhs already paid, an amount of Rs.20 lakhs to the parents of each student be paid. The amount of compensation is to be borne by the Hira Dam Board, Himachal government and the Vijnanjyoti college. The compensation is to be paid within 8 weeks with simple interest. The judgment commented that the officials of the Dam released water without prior notice which caused the drowning of the students. It said that the management of the college also failed to create awareness about possible sudden release of waters.
