The chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir and leader of PDP Mufti Muhmmad Sayeed died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi on Thursday. He was admitted into the hospital with high fever and throat infection on December 24. His condition continued to be critical and was on ventillater. His end came at 7.30 AM.
Sayeed assumed charge as the chief minister on March 1 last year. The voters routed the Congress-National Conference combine and elected the alliance of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and BJP. There were many key turns in Sayeed’s political life. He was Union Home Minister in 1989, the first Muslim to hold that portfolio.
Sayee who started life as a Congress worker, was with the party will 1987. Later in 1999 he floated the PDP along with his daughter Mehbuba Mufti.
He was chief minister of Kashmir twice from 2002-2005 and March 2015 to January, 2016.
