The Pakistan Army Chief, General Raheel Sharif for the first time has openly declared that Kashmir is Pakistan’s “Jugular Vein” and has also said that the “Matchless sacrifices offered by Kashmiris will not go in vain.” The issue should be resolved in accordance to the wishes of the Kashmiris and as per the UNSC resolutions with regard to such issues, he opined in the “Martyr’s Day” meeting held today in Islamabad.
Sharif has also declared that a solution sooner than later to the contentious issue is “indispensable.” “Pakistan Army is in favour of peace but is always ready to respond to any aggression in befitting manner,” he announced. The Pakistan Army is capable of facing any challenges coming from outside enemies are from inside. With the support of the public, it will handle all anti-state issues within the boundaries also, declared Sharif. He has also said that Pakistan Army believes in strengthening of democracy, supremacy of constitution and rule of law.
The meeting was attended by several Pak ministers and by former army chief Pervez Kayani. The comments assume greater importance in the background of recent attempts of incursions at the Indian border and the ongoing general elections in India bringing new aggressive Hindu nationalist party, BJP to the power.
