Telangana Chief Minister KCR assured that he would order enquiry on police excesses if any during the recent agiation at University of Hyderabad. Replying to a debate on the arrest of students, the visit of Kanhaiya Kumar and other in Assembly today, he said he would also take up the demand of recall of the vice chancellor Prof P Appa Rao with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “I will speak on my behalf, on the behalf of this august House with PM on the issue” he said.
Describing Rohit Vemula a bright student, Mr Rao said his untimely death is unfortunate. “I did not get complete information about Rohith since he was from Guntur. But I did enquire about his movements and abilities” he stated. “Caste is not the criterion for one’s abilities. There shall not be any discrimination even if he is a dalit. I am not the one who support that argument” he said.
KCR explained the House that he maintained silence on Rohith issue as it has taken a a very sensitive turn. Several politicians including Rahul Gandhi, Kejriwal, left leaders have visited the varsity and I felt that it will not be the right time to intervene, he added.
Speaking on JNU student leader Kanhaiya’s visit to Hyderabad, “ It was me who summoned the DGP and two city police commissioners and told them clearly not to arrest the student leader and asked them to provide him all the security for his meetings”
Accordingly the police acted cautiously and handled the situation brilliantly and never objected Kanhaiya’s visit to various points in the city, the chief minister explained.
It was the circular issued by the VC that no outsider was allowed to enter the campus which prevented Kanhaiya to enter the campus. The university security have stopped the JNU student leader from entering the campus, he averred.
“Tension prevailed in the campus after the VC Appa Rao rejoined to work after going on a two month leave. The state government has no say in getting the VC recalled. It is a central government institution and our role is only to maintain the law and order that too outside the campus” he clarified.
KCR also said that he would personally take this matter to PM and get a solution within 3 days if possible. He explained the house that the police were helpless and it was a precarious situation for them as their prime duty was to bring the situation under control.
On the death of a person in Osmania campus, the Chief Minister said the diseased person was not a student but an outsider.
Students misunderstood and agitated in the campus., he said.
Condemning the attack on MLA Sampath Kumar who went to the campus, he said people’s representatives should not be blocked and abused. ‘Since Sampath Kumar had not lodged any complaint no action was taken by the police’ Mr Rao clarified.
