KTR’s Concern for Backward Districts, Urged Centre to Strengthen MGNREGS

Untitled-2K T Ramarao the IT and Panchayat Raj Minister urged Nitin Gadkari the Union Rural Development Minister to strengthen MGNREGS (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme) in Telangana State in which nine out of the 10 districts were not only backward but drought prone. He further urged the Centre to enhance the number of wage days per household from 100 to 150 days in view of drought situation prevailing in the State. KTR write a letter to the Union Minister on Friday in which he expressed concerns of the State government. The cause of the concern of the State government stems from repeated news in media that Centre was planning to scale down MGNREGA and restrict it only to backward mandals.
He opined if such a decision was really taken, a great injustice would be done to newly-formed State of Telangana. The Minister said, under this scheme, works related to road connectivity, construction of warehouses, desilting of tanks, soil and moisture conservation and increasing green cover in the State from 25 per cent to 33 per cent were being done.
