‘Let us save Ozone layer’

Ozone_over_southern_hemisphere_Sep11_1957-2001UN General Assembly adopted a resolution, which proclaims September 16, as the International Day for the preservation of the Ozone layer to celebrate Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the Ozone layer, which was signed on September 16, 1987.  Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Prakash Javadekar expressed confidence to win the war against climate change. Addressing school students he said this win will give a better life stating that Ozone layer is the protective blanket provided by nature. He administered a pledge and a booklet “Montreal Protocol: India’s Success Story” was also released. Poster, painting and slogan and edition of “The Montreal Protocol: India’s Success Story” were also released. Montreal Protocol has led to a complete phase-out of production and consumption of ODSs. ODSs like CFCs, CTC halons, Methyl Chloroform and Methyl Bromide have already been phased-out to protect Ozone layer and climate. GHG emissions have been reduced by more than 11 Giga tonnes CO2 equivalent per year through the ODS phase-out of the Montreal Protocol. India, part of Vienna Convention and Montreal Protocol had been sharing concern to phase out ODSs. These substances are used in industrial and pharmaceutical aerosols, refrigeration, air-conditioning equipments, foam manufacturing, fire extinguishing equipment, metal-cleaning, garment cleaning, soil fumigation, quarantine and pre-shipment applications.
