Lord played dice with Mahanthu

Venkanna-Kathalu-Part04Lord Venkateshwara is believed to have played the game of dice with His staunch devotee Mahanthu Hathiramji Bavaji about 500 years ago atop the Tirumala Hills. People heard the sound of dice. It was a miracle and attracted the attention of the then king of Chandragiri who dared to test it. The king got Hathiramjee locked up in a room and filled the room with bundles of sugar canes. The next morning not a cane was found. The Lord is believed to have descended in the form of an Elephant and ate away sugar canes. Then onwards Bavaji made offering of fresh cow milk, Navaneetham and camphor light (haarathi) to the Lord daily and even today the tradition is continued by Bavaji’s descendants as one saint belonging to his matam along with Sannidhi Golla and archakas, offers cow milk, butter, special clothes, to the Lord daily during the Suprabath Seva in the Anandanilayam – the main temple. The Mahanthus strictly followed Brahmacharya and well versed in Vedas belong to North India are dedicated in the service of the Lord. . Later, Hathiramji built an ashram near Aaksha Ganga for his penance and the temple of Venugopala Swamy. He entered jeevasamadhi nearby and even today scores of devotees have the darshan of Venugopala and Hathiramji first and then worship at Srivari temple. Hathiramji matam was entrusted with the task of temple administration by the British rulers on July 16, 1843. The then Mahantu Sevadasji was made responsible to take care of the entire priceless jewels, crowns, jewellery, vehicles, articles, accunts, other valuable assets and the ceremonious idols of the Lord. Till 1933 Hathiramji race maintained the administration and developed Tirupati in all respects including the tanks, choultries, 7-km Steps across the 7 Hills, Schools for Vedas and Ayurvedam, printing press, Gopuram, drinking water facility,  office and other infrastructure on a grand-scale. Later, the TTD took over the administration.
