It was for the first time in the history of Bollywood that the legendary story of Bajirao Peshwa I was made into a film. This, despite the vibrant film industry flourishing in the
heart of Maharashtra. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus ‘Bajirao Mastani’ was based on a novel and went to become this year’s biggest hit and won many awards including
the prestigious National Award for best film in Popular category.
Ranveer Singh, who portrayed the role of the brave Peshwa won many laurels and justly so. His energy and flawless performance in every scene, as a lover, husband, a leader and
a great warrior – were major contribution for the film’s success ably supported by Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra.
The ‘Lokmat Maharashtrian of The Year’ award is bestowed to individuals who have made positive difference to the state and have elevated the image of Maharashtra in the
national and international level. The other Bollywood actors to have received the award include Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar. This year the jury to decide the awardee
included former Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, Former Union Minister Praful Patel, lawyer Ujjwal Nikam, activist Medha Patkar, industrialist Harsh Goenka,
journalist Ayaz Memon and filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar.
The award will be presented by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis later in the day.
