Irom Sharmila Chanu, Manipur’s Iron Lady, fasting for the last 14 years with a demand to repeal the Central government’s Armed Forces Special Powers Act, was recently offered support from AAP if she chooses to contest for Parliament. Yesterday, she rejected the proposal by Kejriwal’s AAP, saying “Since I don’t want to enter politics, I have applied my mind and rejected the offer this morning,” Sharmila told reporters on Friday during her routine production before an Imphal court. “Politics according to me is uncertain and vague as the people cannot keep their faith and trust on the politicians all the time,” said Sharmila (42).
The initial offer to her to contest under AAP banner came through Prashant Bhushan and Just Peace Foundation which has been supporting her since long.
Sharmila had earlier termed politicians ”shameless” people. Sharmila has been on an entirely liquid diet since year 2000.
AAP has been scouting for strong faces to represent the party from various parts of the country, as their relation with Anna Hazare keeps vacillating between the very best to the worst, they are on a constant lookout for crusader figures. Irom would have been a best choice from the far North East, where national politics take a back seat usually.
