The Australian player Glenn Maxwell has single-handedly pulled Dhoni’s Chennai team from scoring another win. But his 38 ball 90 run feat had earned laurels from Team Chennai, and Team India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. India’s own swashbuckling captain had equated Maxwell with the batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar at his prime.
Maxwell’s Punjab team captain, India’s most feared opener Virender Sehwag took it a step further and declared Maxwell a better hitter of the ball than himself! “No, no. I was not that destructive. I was a bit, but not that much,” Sehwag said. Sehwag felt that Maxwell is better than Caribbean batting storm, Chris Gayle.
“I don’t think he is worried about his game; he’s more worried about golf and practises more golf than cricket. He just goes out there in the middle, gives his 100 per cent out there and comes back happily with whatever he gets,” said Sehwag about Maxwell.
Maxwell definitely merits the comparison with Sachin, Sehwag and Gayle in the present season of IPL. He has scored 435 runs from just seven matches at an average of 62 plus with a strike rate of 203! As he not showing any signs of slowing down, he has plenty more matches to play and set new standards in high scores, surpassing Gayle and Hussey’s record of 733 in a season. He has missed a century four times in the tourney already, scoring 95, 89, 95 and 90! He is also holding the record of highest sixes in the tourney, 27 already.
