Militants used civilians as shield to escape

militants-who-attackedMilitants who crossed Jhelum and attacked a paramilitary camp in northern Kashmir’s Baramulla on Sunday night used darkness and the presence of civilians “as shield” to escape.

One terrorist escaped by jumping into the Jhelum river and swam across to different location.

A Border Security Force soldier was killed and another wounded after at least six gunmen attacked the 46 Rashtriya Rifles camp in Janbazpora on the outskirts of Baramulla city around 10.30pm, triggering retaliation from the forces.

Militants used the large population surrounding the camp as “shield”, according to police. Forces could not retaliate heavily as it would have otherwise caused civilian casualties.

A “GPS device and wire cutters” were found during search after the attack, a BSF spokesperson said.

Though the attack came three days after India claimed to have conducted “surgical strikes” across the LoC, army sources said it was not correct to term it a “retaliation” by Pakistan, as the attackers were unlikely to have crossed the LoC in the past few days.
