National Mission for Clean Ganga and Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan signed a Memorandum of Understanding in the presence of Union Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Minister Uma Bharti. The objective of the MoU was to involve youth in awareness creation, public outreach activities, afforestation drive for medicinal plants and native tree species, promoting sanitation and construction of toilets in rural and urban areas, educating people for tackling pious refuse entering into the river, removal of floating solid waste, promotion of bio-agriculture and clean village.
Taking leverage from the network of youths of NYKS, National Mission for Clean Ganga seek support to implement activities at local level that will encourage public participation and assist in restoring the health of Ganga river. Uma Bharti said this is a historic occasion to foster Ganga cleaning by way of involving the youth. She said youth volunteers will plant different saplings of medicinal plants, trees and fodder crops right from Gangotri upto Ganga Sagar. NYKS is a network of 2.95 Lakh village level Youth Clubs with an enrolment of about 8.35 million volunteers between 13 to 35 years.
