Mountain Man on Aamir Khan’s “Satyameva Jayate 2”

Dashrath Manjhi AKA Mountain Man of Gahlour village near Gaya in Bihar, who single handedly worked for 22 years with mere hand tools and broke a mountain to pave a road cutting through, will now feature in the first episode of Aamir Khan’s acclaimed TV show Satyameva JayateSeason Two that begins March 2.

Manjhi’s extraordinary tale started in 1967 when his wife fell of mountain rocks and hurt herself badly while carrying water pot. Manjhi took it upon himself to break the mountain which is causing distress to thousands of villagers and stretching the road by about an extra forty-fifty kilometers. It took him 22 years, from 1960 to 1982 to build a 360 foot long and 30 foot wide road cutting through the mountain using plain hammers, chisels and nails.

Manjhi’s name was proposed for Padma Shree by the Nitish Kumar lead Bihar government. He donated the five acre plot government gave him in recognition of his services for a Hospital! He died in 2007 due to gall bladder cancer and was cremated with full state honors.

Filmmaker Ketan Mehta is working on a film based on his life. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is playing the character. Meanwhile, watch this short video on this extraordinary man and his life!
