Eminent agricultural scientist and father of Green Revolution, Dr MS Swaminathan has showered praise on Telangana government’s key programme- Mission Kakatiya saying it would help the state mitigate the woes of drought and also address the agrarian crisis in a big way. He tweeted that Tamil Nadu should also start such programmed in the right earnets. Here is what he said:
The Telangana Government deserves appreciation on launching ‘Mission Kakatiya’ for desilting tanks and reservoirs in order to increase rain water harvesting and holding capacity. Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have large areas under irrigation from tanks, wells and reservoirs. Therefore there used to be a custom in Tamil Nadu, known as kudi marammat (community maintenance) for desilting local tanks prior to the monsoon. This helped farmers to get the maximum benefit from the rainfall. This kind of community cooperation coupled with equitable sharing of the available water resources, went a long way in mitigating the adverse impact of drought. Precious cattle can also be saved by reviving special water tanks for the animals. These were common practices during my childhood, growing up in Kumbakonam. These vanishing practices need to be revived as part of our climate change management policies. Just as Telangana has launched ‘Mission Kakatiya’, Tamil Nadu should launch a similar ‘Mission Kudi Marammat.
