Munjalu are back

thaati-nungu1They are back. Popularly known as munjalu in Telugu these fruits are most sought after during the hot season. No matter what is the age of a person he would long for the fruits and eat without any reservations even in the open streets while the Sun is hitting from top. The Borassus flabellifer plant and fruit is known as Taati Munjalu in Telugu and sometimes Ice-apple in English especially by the immigrants living in India. They are filled with watery fluid and the fleshy white body tastes good. this is another gift from the nature for the common man on foot-path. This is the season of the ripened fibrous palm fruits. They are popular in city and the outskirts too with the summer catching up ( around 40 degrees centigrade ). Its sales are up by the day in the urban areas as they are good for health and economical. People of all ages eat it voraciously.  More than that, one can quench his thirst consuming the tasty fruits. It keeps you cool. Doctors also said that they not only keep your body cool but also cut down your weight. So one need not run after costly treatment for reducing the weight or to a gym. It has also many benefits. But its market penetration is restricted to summer. This is also used by traditional healers in India and southeast Asia.
