New Act soon to punish child criminals

The Central Government has decided to amend the existing juvenile justice Act contrary to the recommendations made by the Parliamentary committee report. A decision to this effect was taken by the Cabinet committee in New Delhi. Some ministers are understood to have opined in the meeting that hardcore child criminals be considered as elderly criminals. IT and Telecommunications Minister Ravishankar Prasad also made clear child criminals between 16 to 18 years be examined under Indian Penal Code. Child criminals committing rape, murder, robbery, acid attack, inter alia, be punished severely, the Supreme Court opined. The apex court also recently commented that there was a need to review the existing Act.
