Nirbhaya taught us no lessons?

The Nirbhaya incident shook the consciousness of the entire nation. politically it has ceased the career of Sheila Dixit’s Delhi government, and made the identity of Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP. A 24/7 helpline was also established. The Nirbhaya Helpline, as it was called had all women workforce and said to have received over 300 calls everyday and claims to have handled 75,000 cases so far. But the service is facing a closure due to lack of attention. The employees have not been getting salaries for over two months. Their contracts too have not been renewed. The employees took up the matter with Lt. Gov. Najeeb Jung too by a letter, but now solution is coming forth, as of now, one of them said.

A thousand crore fund was also instituted by the then Congress government.Called the Nirbhaya fund, not even a single rupee has been utilized from it so far, as per Vrinda Grover, Nirbhaya task force member. The Finance Ministry has so far approved only two project proposals – one to map routes and track public vehicles on the road and second, a 24×7 emergency response unit to track people in distress. But the funds are yet to be disbursed for these schemes.

Fin. Min P Chidambaram has allotted another 100 crores of non-lapsable funds to the Nirbhaya fund, but if the government shows no keenness on implementing its words, then the situation will remain the same. Already a 6.4% crime rise on women has been reported between 2011 and 2013.

Are we waiting for another Nirbhaya cry…? Can’t we learn even from such ghastly deaths?
