Triggering a controversy, North Korea has today fired a long range rocket, which has placed a satellite in orbit successfully. The earth observation satellite-named as Kwangmyongsong-4 had entered into orbit ten minutes after the launch from the Sohee spce centre, theAerospace Development Administration of N Korea said in a statement. It was done as per the orders of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
The launch was condemned by Japan, South Korea, China and the US, who have requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council later on Sunday. The launch was aimed at developing an ICBM system, the US charged but North Korea denied it saying it is purly scientific in nature.
South Korea says it is to begin discussing with the US the deployment of highly advancea missile defence system- THAAD.
North Korea provoked international criticism earlier this year with a fourth nuclear bomb test on 6 January.
