Oculus VR the gaming goggle maker for virtual reality visions particularly is being bought by social networking behemoth Facebook for $2 billion. This will be Facebook’s first acquisition of a hardware unit also a first purchase of a wearable device manufacturer.
At a time when Google Glass is finding uses in new and unexpected areas by the dozens, Facebook will be speeding up it’s focus shifting from social media with this acquisition. Facebook’s weightier acquisition of WhatsApp for $19 billion also points to this change path being pursued by the company.
Facebook’s plans for Oculus will be about featuring ads, selling goods, offering newer ways to using the device with venturing into beaming sports, offering education or medical consultation… the options are numerous, indicated Zuckerberg while making the announcement yesterday. Oculus glass was “different than anything I’ve ever experienced in my life.,” declared Zuckerberg. “We’re making a long-term bet that immersive, virtual and augmented reality will become a part of people’s daily life,” he added.
Recently, Sony has also unveiled its Project Morpheus VR headset for its playstation 4 games.
