Sampath Kumar, the Tiruchy based IPS officer who mentioned Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s name in his report to have had contacts with bookie Kitty and Chennai Kings official Gurunath Meiyappan has been suspended from serivce. He was instructed not to leave Tiruchy without informing his superiors. Sampath represented the Q branch that took part in investigating the IPL betting scam. In his investigation, he submitted that a bookie he investigated, Utham Jain alias Kitty mentioned that Dhoni, Suresh Raina and Chennai team official Gurunath Meiyappan were in touch with him.
Sampath was later moved from the investigation as another bookie had told CB CID officers that he had given Sampath a bribe of 53 lakhs to save him from trouble. Sampath Kumar submitted 30 lakhs to the department stating it was recovered from bookies.
After the recent Mudgal Committee report to the Supreme Court accusing CSK’s Meiyappan of abetting betting, the present move by Chennai CB CID adds new angle to the IPL scam allegations. After recent remarks by another accused Vindu Dara Singh pointing fingers at Sharad Pawar, the IPL betting saga refuses to die down.
