Patankot, Crucial to Pak

pathankot-attackPatankot in the Western Air Command, has become the crucial point of discussion with the terrorist attack on the air base camp here. As Patankot is just 35 kilo meters away from Pak borders, this town is vital for the country’s defense. In the case of war with Pakistan, this is a vital point to provide arial and land support to the Indian air force and army. The MIG-21 and Bison war planes and MI 25 and MI 35 Helicopters are housed here, always ready to take off when the occasion demands. Powerful, long range missiles also are ready to be targeted from here. In addition to these, some 15 thousand army men keep vigil round the clock on the Pak borders. Now pilotless small planes fixed with Thermo camera here were busy in weeding out the terrorists.

Patankot is a strategic point for Pakistan in case of war with India. Hence Pakistan has an eye on the air base here. In the 1965 war, Pak attacked this air base on September 6. But the Indian air force commandos preempted Pak plans by arresting the Pak soldiers. Pak again attacked this air base in 1971 and damaged the runway partially.

Now it is strongly believed that the terrorist attack was carried on with the connivance of the Pak intelligence agency ISI. Pak army’s single purpose seems to be the destruction of this air base, vital for India’s security. The terrorists seemed to have discussed with their men in Pak about this issue according to the Indian Intelligence Bureau.

Search goes on for the body of the sixth terrorist, suspected to be blown off. Security has been tightened in the town. An army report says that combing continues till the air base is declared safe.

The superintendent of police of Gurdaspur Salwinder Singh has spoken for the first time after the terrorist attack. He said that four or five persons speaking in Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi threatened him with AK-47 rifles. He was bound hand and foot and pushed into the back seat of a car. He was driven for some distance and thrown off. He said that they might not know that he was a cop.
