Player dies at the middle of a game at Norway Chess Olympiad!

chess2Chess Olympiad in Norway ended on a tragic note! Two contestants died on the final day of this tournament. Kurt Meier, a 67 year old member of Seychelles team collapsed and died during the final round of two-week long chess Olympiad in Tromsoe, northern Norway. Another player, from Uzbekistan was found dead in his hotel room.
According to tournament spokesperson Jarle Heitman, both players died of natural causes. “Emergency workers rushed to protect Kurt Meier after he collapsed in a game against Rwanda. After this incident Seychelles team officials didn’t immediately reply to phone calls and emails”, he added. Alain Patience, Rwanda team member who played against Meier when he collapsed expressed condolences to Meier’s family on Twitter. A minute’s silence was observed at the closing ceremony to mark the death of first player. Tromsoe police said ‘no crime suspected in either case’.
China won the men’s title and Russia won the women’s title in this tournament where 3,000 contestants participated.
