The Supreme Court of India took a serious tone with the government of India over the issue of cleaning river Ganga. Apex court bench headed by Justice TS Thakur pointed out to the government solicitor general Mukul Rohatgi – “you are not showing any urgency in cleaning of river Ganga.”
Apex court bench has also commented that “cleaning of river Ganga is in BJP’s election manifesto, but the government is not taking any measures to clean the river. The issue of cleaning river Ganga is very important and should be kept in the forefront.”
Finally, the court has asked the Central government to submit a status report along with roadmap within two weeks for cleaning up the river Ganga. BJP leader Uma Bharti has been given the Water Resources and Ganga Cleaning project portfolios in the present government. Earlier UP Government proposed a Ganga Cleaning Mission at a cost of Rs.7000 crores expected to be completed by 2020 with the cooperation of World Bank.
