Union HRD minister Smriti Irani has announced that a probe committee will be appointed to go into the circumstances that led to clashes between the local and non-local students. “I spoke to Mehbooba Mufti, the Chief Minister and she told me that normalcy will be restored soon. I assure the student committee that no injustice is done to anyone, including the non-Kashmiris” Smriti said. The exams will be conducted in a secure environment and we will also allow the students who want to go home, she added.
Meanwhile, the non-locals have reportedly placed four demands before the HRD ministry panel which interacted with them this afternoon. They are:
1. The national flag shall be hoisted on the campus, along with the state flag.
2. The management should arrange for permanent security for students at the NIT from miscreants who often pelt stones at them.
3. The university administration should make sure that equality and transparency is maintained during all examinations in the campus. While demanding postponement of exams in college, the students be assessed by non-local faculty to ensure they are fairly marked in the exams.
4. Central forces should be engaged for the security of NIT students.
A student union representative has argued that they want their national flag, which was confiscated by the police during the lathi-charge. “Everyone here is supporting the Kashmiris. We are being singled out. Better you shift the campus out of Srinagar or shift us to other NITs” he said.
