Under the pretext of constructing roads and ghats for the ensuing Godavari pushkaralu in Adilabad district and at 22 other venues. private contractors, who were entursted with the task have started collecting their pound of flesh from the government. They have resorted to large-scale digging on the river beds for llifting the sand for construction of ghats. Officers concerned though informed were keeping away from the complaints. Their only job seems to ensure that the ensuing Pushkaralu in Adilabad district would be a grand success.
Instead of bringing the sand from the quarries, the greedy contractors chose to collect the government material from the river bed itself without obtaining prior permission from the government. The KCR government has already released Rs 23 crore for building 23 ghats on a grand scale. Road works have already started and Rs 40 crore has been released. Adilabad district is being readied for the pushkaralu and the government had taken it as a challenge to conduct it with pomp and splendour. Ghats in Bhasar and at 23 other places would be kept ready to accommodate pilgrims coming in large numbers. But the contractors were otherwise collecting from the State treasury in a big way and there is no check. Public representatives and officers concerned were not in a position to hear the grievances of the devotees who were demanding that a check should be conducted on contractors’ works.
