Raising Narmada dam height will affect 2.5 lakh people: NBA

Narendra Modi in a gift to home state Gujarat, allowed the Narmada river Sardar Sarovar Dam project height to be raised by 17 meters, taking it to 138 meters from the current 121 meters. The move will give motor assurance for Gujarat’s drinking water, irrigation needs; also adding power generation capacities to the project. But Narmada Bachao Andolan is protesting the move, saying over 2.5 lakh people living in the area will be displaced while the rehabilitation of previous displace persons is still pending. The height raising issue had been pending from last eight years. Guj. CM Anandiben Patel discussed the issue in her first meeting with older colleague, present PM Modi and within days, the permission had been given.
