Taj Mahal is the symbol of love.. Those who visit the beautiful monument at Agra would love to have a snap by sitting on a marble-made bench in front of the great structure. Especially couple, newly-married ones, tourists, foreign dignitaries make it a point to have a memorable photograph.
Prince Charles and Lady Diana were in India in 1992 but it was just Diana who visited the Taj. She sat alone on the bench, giving strength to rumour mills that her marriage was in deep trouble. Charles was in Delhi at that time. Interestingly he visited the Taj 11 years earlier and said he hoped to come back with his wife. But he did not and only Diana paid a visit.
The solo photo of the princess was just what the public needed to confirm their suspicions that the marriage was indeed over.
When Diana was asked by a reporter about her feelings toward the world-famous mausoleum, she replied, “It was a fascinating experience — very healing.” When pressed to explain, she smiled and said, “Work it out for yourself.”
Diana and Charles had been married in 1981, and about 10 years later the separation rumors started flying. Their separation came in December of ’92 with a formal divorce in 1996, just one year before the princess was killed in a car accident in Paris.
Now, the royal couple, Prince William and Kate Middleton are now in Delhi and will be visiting Taj on April 16, the old memories have become a topic of discussion among the media. William is going to get a picture with Kate at the same bench on that day.
The royal couple, who played cricket with Sachin, attended a gala in which top Bollywood stars participated and also in a private function in which William donned the role of a cook and prepared a dosa and had it.
