uphaar-fire_650x400_41439994534Supreme Court has at last delivered a verdict in the Delhi Upahar cinema theatre historic conflagration incident after 18 years imposing a fine of Rs 60 crore on theatre owners and provided the much needed relief to the victims. On June 13, 1997 the theatre was packed to see the film ‘border’ and within no time a big fire enveloped the cinema hall killing 59 and injuring 100s of viewers. After investigation and prosecution the Delhi high court jailed the owners Sushil Ansal and Gopal Ansal for two years. But the apex court quashed the HC orders and ordered a compensation of Rs 60 crore to be paid by the Ansal brothers. Victims’ families were overjoyed at the SC decision and appealed for speedy payment of compensation.
