04_SM_NAYANTARA_1_2266929fNayantara Sehgal, niece of former pm J L Nehru, has turned down the Sahithya Academy award which has upset the Modi government. She was
moved by certain incidents – Dadri, M M Kalburgi, Narendra Dabhlkar, Govnd Pansare murders among others. She said that some outfits under
the cover of Hindutva were resorting to unwarranted activities while defaming the name of the country. She refused to take the award and returned it to the Centre as a protest against the said incidents. She got the award in 1986 for her novel Rich Like Us. She also opposed the Emergency ( 1975-77 ) under her cousin and former pm Indira Gandhi. Sehgal is the daughter of Vijayalaxmi Pandit ( Nehru’s sister ).
