Seven members of the snake gang which threatened lone women by releasing snakes on to them and later looting their property and outraged their modesty have been sentenced to life imprisonment. Another accused was sentenced for seven years of jail. The FAC II special sessions judge of Ranga Reddy district court complex, LB Nagar, has convicted them yesterday and pronounced the quantum of sentence today.
Gang rape charges have been dropped against four key accused as the victim did not confirm the same during the trial- apparently due to fear from the fugitives or due fear of social alienation. Police drew flak from several quarters for ‘failing to convince the victims that they are there to provide adequate security to fight back’.
According to charge sheet of the police, on July 31 last year, Faizal Dayyani, Khader Barakba, Tayyab Basalma, Md Pervez, Syed Anwar, Khaja Ahmed, Mohammed Ibrahim, Ali Barakba and Salam Hamdi trespassed into a farm house at Shaheen Nagar after beating up the watchman. They had threatened the 18-year-old woman and her businessman boyfriend with snakes and sexually exploited her.
The woman is a degree student and her male companion her family friend.
After the rape, the culprits escaped with Rs 60,000 in cash and valuables. The gang even recorded the video of the heinous act on cell phones and threatened the victims saying that the clip would be uploaded online if they approach police.
Police sources said the `snake gang’ had been resorting to such heinous acts since 2011.
