The Union minister of women and child welfare said that the government is actively considering a proposal to make sex determination of the foetus mandatory. The minister said that special care would be taken of the foetus once it is determined to be a girl child through sex determination. The pregnant women have to register themselves with the authorities once the sex of the foetus is determined. If abortion is warranted, the pregnant woman has to obtain a medical certificate from the authorities for it.
Earlier, sex determination was banned in 1994, as abortions reached alarming proportions once the foetus was determined to be a girl child.
