Bowing to the pressures from all walks and Bombay High Court direction, the famed Shani Shingnapur Temple Trust decided to permit the women devotees into the sanctum sanctorum of the temple here today. The historic decision was taken after the management received the copy of the court directions. Now women devotees can enter and pray at the open-to-sky platform shrine here from Friday.
For over four centuries, women have been barred from stepping onto the high platform on which stands a black stone – symbolising Shanideva or Lord Saturn here.
The decision was welcomed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Bhumata Ranragini Brigade president Trupti Desai, who had been campaigning for months seeking women’s entry.
