Sircilla Powerloom Workers’ Strike Evokes Mixed Response

strikeThe ongoing strike by the power loom workers of Sircilla textile town has evoked a mixed response. The reason being the bulk order for sarees and dhotis by the TN government.

The workers have been staging a strike under the banner of Sircilla Power loom Weavers Association since Tuesday and are demanding increase in wages.

The striking workers have been demanding hike in wages from 17 paise to 30 paise per 10 pics.

With the ongoing strike, the order by the TN government is left incomplete. The companies who were outsourcing the bulk order are a worried lot and have been demanding exemption to their companies from the ongoing strike.

Raja Rani Weaving Company, who bagged the order for bulk supply of 1.72 crore dhotis and 1.73 sarees, has requested the association to exempt their workers from participating in the strike. According to its proprietor the company is paying higher wage to the workers hence the strike becomes nullified. Further, incompletion of the order may stop any future orders to the companies. “If the production of sarees is interrupted, it would impact further orders. Nearly 80 per cent production has been completed so far,” the company said.
