The Situation continues to be tense over the suicide of the scholar Rohit of UoH, who ended his life by hanging at his hostel room on Sunday evening. There was scuffle between the students and the police when the dead body was being shifted for post mortem. The students associations demanded that cases should be booked on those who were responsible for Rohit’s suicide. The students gathered at the administrative building and raised slogans against the vice chancellor. They demanded the VC’s explanation over the suicide. Rohit’s mother said amid sobs that her son was of stubborn mind and persecution by the university officials must have driven him to take this extreme step.
On December 21, five Dalit scholars including Rohit were barred from being seen in groups at common places, administrative building and were expelled from the hostel and disallowed from participating in the students union elections
The students accused that the university administration expelled the Dalit scholars including Rohit at the behest of some BJP leaders. They said a ‘scuffle’ between the Ambedkar students union and ABVP students led to the Dalit students expulsion. After conciliatory talks with the VC and other officials concerned failed, the students filed a writ petition in the High Court challenging the expulsion by the VC. Amid these developments came the tragic end of the scholar.
