It is heartening to note that the overall smoking habit in the country is on the decrease. But the sad part of it is the number of women smokers in our country is on the increase and only next to the US in this respect. Though the number of used cigarettes in the country is 10,180 crores in 2013-14, it came down to 9,320 crores in 2014-15 according to the report submitted by the health department to parliament. The production of cigarettes was 11,010 in 2013-14, it was less by 10,530 crores in 2014-15.
But alas! the number of women smokers in India increased from 53 lakhs in 1980 to 1.25 crores in 2012, according to Global Tobacco Study. The Anti Tobacco Activists are concerned about it.
