Although Union HRD minister Smriti Zubin Irani has won all round appreciation for her spirited defence over the contentious Rohit Vemula suicide issue, the doctor who rushed to examine the dead body of the scholar disputed her claim completely.
Smriti’s words in Lok Sabha that ‘nobody allowed a doctor near’ Hyderabad student’s body were totally wrong, according to Dr Rajasree Malpath, Chief Medical Officer of the HCU. “Mr Rohit could have been saved if his body was allowed to be shifted to a hospital” was the purport of Smriti’s words and she made this claim apparently on the basis of a report of the Telangana police.
Dr Rajasree Malpath told in an interview that “around 7.30 pm I got a call from the hostel. I reached within 4 minutes. I examined for pulse and BP, despite knowing he is probably dead. There was no pulse or blood pressure. His body was cold, stiff and rigid. His tongue was protruding and rigor mortis had set in,” the doctor explained
A video of the room where Rohith’s body was kept that day, shared by his friends, shows policemen next to the body, which contradicts the minister’s claim that the police were not allowed near the body till the next morning.
Congress leaders now circulate this video of the doctor’s interview as well as the video being shared by students which, according to them, “proves the blatant lies of Smriti”
