Shortly Solar powered trains will run as the railways had been planning to introduce them in view of losses suffered by it due to hike in the fuel prices. The railway department has focussed its attention in the coming October budget on utilising the Solar power in a big way. An air conditioned coach was fitted with solar power panels successfully under a pilot project by the Dellhi railway zone. Now plans are afoot to run the trains on a large-scale. Once solar trains are on the rails, they would find a full solution to the pollution apart from reducing its cost on fuel consumption.
Solar power generators will be fixed on top of the coaches and panels will be arranged in 40 square meters. In 24 square meters 12 solar panels will be fixed to generate the required energy to run the train. Yearly 90,000 litres of diesel will be saved and 200 tonnes of carbon di oxide will be eliminated. Indian Railways is planning to produce power under the solar scheme for AC and non-AC coaches. Besides, focus is on utilising the CNG and bio-diesel also.
