HY16CHIRU_G2A13KB12_145224gAt last locals in Sompeta won the battle against setting up a thermal power station as the AP government has decided to put an end to the aforesaid thermal unit. A decision to this effect was taken by the AP Cabinet on Saturday providing relief to the Sompeta locals who began agitation and relay hunger strikes for over 2,000 days since December 4, 2009 to protect their coconut gardens. YSR government allotted 972.69 acres and another 563 wet lands for the plant and issued orders in 2008 for constructing the said plant despite stiff opposition from locals. Three people were killed in the police firing to push back the protesters as the Nagarjuna Construction company tried to lay the corner stone on April 30 and again on July 14, 2010.
