Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee (DMSC), a 1 lakh 30 thousand member forum of Kolkata’s Sonagachi sex workers, has advised all sex workers of Asia’s largest Red Light district to not entertain Africans so as not to contract the dreaded Ebola fever. ‘We have requested the sex workers not to entertain Africans as it can be a life risk for them if they get infected by the highly contagious Ebola virus causing havoc in some West African countries,’ Mahasweta, a member of the DMSC said.
As the EVD – Ebola Virus Disease is know to widely effect migratory populations, hospital staff, diabetics, immuno-compromised patients, patients with kidney and liver failure and HIV infected people, there is need for increased awareness. As sex workers are more prone to get in contact with sweat, saliva, cough, blood and other bodily secretions, DMSC is also running awareness camps in several risk prone areas. ‘According to WHO guidelines, transmission of the virus requires close contact with body fluids such as sweat, saliva, cough of an infected person and also body contact. So we are training the sex workers on how to identify the symptoms,’ Samarjit Jana of Durbar, who is looking after the training program told.
As of August 11th, total number of cases registered are 1975 and deaths are put at 1069. Spotted first in Sudan, the disease no has at least four of the West African countries in severe grip. As 80% of patients die, the disease is threatening to raise mountains of dead bodies wherever it goes.
