The proposed goods and services tax bill may get the nod of States also apart from members from other parties. The ruling party has begun to muster the support from Opposition MPs. States were angry with the Congress party for a move to block it in the House. Along with AIADMK support the NDA government has been planning to sustain from small parties. States are for the bill as they get tax share if the bill is passed. Several States are likely to support the said bill. States’ MPs also find fault with the Congress party for attempts to terminate the GST bill which provides income to States.
Opposition and States flayed the Congress party stand more so when it supported the insurance bill in the House, which was opposed by all. With 244 member strength in the House, 162 members support is a must to get the bill passed. In the RS the NDA has 64 MPs and it would go to 127 with the support of other party MPs. It would fall short of 35 members. If AIADMK supports in RS 11 votes can be added. Still there shall be a shortage of 24 votes. The ruling party has also been planning to alter the GST from 27 percent to somewhere between 18 percent and 22 percent with a view to gaining the backing of Opposition MPs and States.
