Supreme appoints foreign arbitrator in Reliance KGBasin dispute

The Supreme Court today has appointed Michael Hudson McHugh, an Australian Judge as the foreign arbitrator in the KG Basin gas output dispute between Reliance and the central oil ministry. The Supreme Court had earlier appointed James Spigelman, another Australian judge as the arbitrator and later withdrew the nomination as he figured in the Reliance industry lawyers list.

The Reliance industry will be represented by former CJ SP Bharucha and the central government will be by another former CJ VN Khare in the arbitration board. The oil ministry has accused that the Mukesh Ambani led Reliance industries is cheating the government by withdrawing less amount of gas, while Reliance has been claiming geological reasons for the reduced output.
