The University Grants Commission (UGC), a statutory organisation charged with coordination, determination and maintenance of standards of university education, has asked Symbiosis and Shiv Nadar Universities to shut down four year courses within 15 days.
Both the universities are autonomous deemed universities. A new controversy has kick started between universities for autonomy after this order from UGC.
Two months before, Delhi University was asked to scrap its two year under graduate program.
The UGC claims all universities should follow its notification issued in july which said four-year-courses should be done away with. The individual notification was sent to Symbiosis only after it became known that it had failed to do so.
Symbiosis Chancellor Dr S Mazumdar reacting on the issue said, “Universities should be allowed to be innovative and flexible, we will appeal to the UGC and the Human Resources Development Ministry to reconsider the decision.”
