On Friday T. Harish Rao who is an Irrigation minister said that it is most unfortunate that AP Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu asked AP irrigation officials to explore the possibility of raising Polavaram Dam’s height by 15 feet from the proposed +150 feet, unmindful of the dangers to Khammam district, which is in Telangana. Against this TS Telangana government has in principle decided to lodge two complaints against AP.
Mr. Harish Rao said “Already Telangana has been expressing apprehensions about Polavaram Dam’s height which is now pegged at +150 feet, for it will submerge all the tribal tracks and the famous Srirama temple in Bhadrachalam. If another 15 feet is raised, we can write off what now remains of Khammam district. We will complain to the Central Water Commission as well as the Godavari River Management Board about this”.
“I have asked officials to lodge a formal complaint on this. The AP government has already issued orders of sanctioning Rs 1,300 crore on the Lift Scheme, which is a clear violation of the AP Reorganization Act. Approvals of the river Boards must have been taken before,” he said. The Telangana is already in the process of preparing complaints to both Godavari and Krishna River Management Boards.
