The legendary bond of Salman Khan with Eid

Salman Khan in SultanIt was the blockbuster hit ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ way back in 1989 that established Salman Khan as a lead actor to reckon with and resurrected the ailing Rajshree Productions. The usual love story got the Rajshree touch with a lot of sentiment and good music, and paved way for the other hit in the combination, ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’. What followed was the fantastic career of Salman that was filled with ups and downs and some very low points that eventually led to the super stardom he enjoys now.
He had to his credit classics like ‘Saajan’, ‘Hum Dil Dechuke Sanam’, and a few other hits, and a lot of letdowns too for many years.
In fact some of his worst films according to IMDB, the movie database website, include ‘Man Aurr Mrs Khanna’, ‘Tere Naam’ (This was one of the many remakes from South that Salman acted in), ‘Veer’(Many viewers still have nightmares when they remember this one), ‘Yuvraaj’, ‘Jaanam Samjha Karo’, ‘Lucky’, ‘Marigold’, ‘God Tussi Great Ho’, ‘Tum Ko Na Bhool Payenge’ (Didn’t we forget this one actually happened). Well, we can add a good 20-something films to this list.
Looking at the undulated craze Sallu Bhai gets at the box office today, can we even imagine that he has had more duds than hits in his career, especially between 2008 and 2009 until ‘Wanted’ happened.
‘Wanted’ was a remake of a Telugu film, ‘Pokiri’ and turned out to be blockbuster, setting a record of sorts by collecting Rs 808.7 million in its first week itself. Incidentally the film released on Eid day. And a tradition was born.
Since then every other Salman Khan’s film that was released on Eid every year (barring just 2013) went on to become a bigger hit than the previous one. ‘Dabbang’ (2010), ‘Bodyguard’ (2011), ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ (2012), ‘Kick’ (2014) and ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ (2015).
This year Eid is going to be yet another special one for Salman as his much awaited ‘Sultan’ is set to release on the festival day. The sports drama conceptualized by the writer, director Ali Abbas Zafar, and produced by Aditya Chopra under the Yash Raj banner is about a wrestler Sultan Ali Khan, who becomes an international star after his wins at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, the 2011 FILA Wrestling World Championships in Istanbul and London Olympics 2012. His love interest in the film is Anushka Sharma who plays the young woman wrestler from Haryana. The films trailers have already created a buzz, and it is only a month or so, when ‘Sultan’ will in all probability yet again prove the legendary bond of Salman Khan with Eid.
