Within one day of polling in Telangana, the Congress led Central Government has taken a decisive step to show to the Seemandhra public that it is very much concerned with the welfare of the region by deciding to float a special Polavaram Project Authority, to be established formally after May 7th. The Cabinet Committee meeting attended by the Prime Minister, Vayalar Ravi, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Jairam Ramesh and others took the crucial poll linked decision yesterday.
The Andhra Pradesh Reconstitution Bill Section 90(1) gives the Center responsibility to ensure and over see the progress of this declared national project. The rescue and rehabilitation for the project, the construction responsibilities, the administration of the project after it is over, the distribution of electricity produced, account and distribution of expenses and debts of the project will be taken care of by the PPA. The CEO will be assisted by several members belonging to engineering, water bodies administration, planning and design, tribal affairs bodies.
The project cost estimated at 10,151 crores in 2009, has now risen to 16,010 crores. 90% of this would be spent by the Center. As the Andhra Pradesh state has already spent about 5,135 crores, the entire expenses from now on will be paid by the Center.
