The unresolved mystery of Divya Bharthi’s death


It was on April 5, 1993, the beautiful actress, whose career was going great guns, and just three years into films, had already amassed the love of thousands of fans across the country, died suddenly; much to the dismay of her fans and the film fraternity. Divya Bharathi, despite just three years of film career, continues to be remembered fondly.
It was in 1990, Suresh Productions released Telugu film, ‘Bobbili Raja’, directed by B Gopal and written by Paruchuri Brothers, with young Daggubati Venkatesh in the lead. The film that combines the time tested revenge drama has in addition a parallel love story of a young girl lost in the woods, and meets the hero, who manages to win the heart of this beautiful, haughty, spirited, yet innocent young lady. The film in addition to wonderful music by Ilayaraja, captivating cinematography by K Ravindra Babu and re-introduction of yesteryear heroine Vanisri in a negative shaded role, has given one of the sensational finds of film industry – the bubbly Divya Bharathi. All 16 at the time of the film, Divya Bharathi stole many hearts and attributed majorly to the first Silver Jubilee hit of Venkatesh.
She never looked back. One hit after other in Telugu films kept her going strong and she was soon seen acting with top heroes of the time Chiranjeevi (Rowdy Alludu), Mohan Babu (Assembly Rowdy) and Nandamuri Balakrishna (Dharma Kshetram). Within no time she was signed for Bollywood. She acted with Sunny Deol for the film, ‘Viswatma’, which may not have been a huge hit, but was enough to give her name and fame. The film is also known for its music with popular songs like, ‘Saat Samundar’.
A few films that followed either fared average or were stupendous hits – but the new phenomenon Divya Bharathi continued to make waves. She acted in ‘Deewana’ with Rishi Kapoor and debut actor Shah Rukh that in addition to being a great hit gave her a Filmfare Award for Lux New Face of The Year. Shah Rukh too received the Best Male Debut award for the year.
She was doing very well in Hindi films, yet decided to act in atleast one Telugu film in a year. Meanwhile, she fell in love with producer Sajid Nadiadwala, and married him. All seemed well, until one day, she fell down from the fifth floor of her apartment building and succumbed to injury. The cause of the fall continues to be a mystery and there were rumours of fight between the couple, and depression etc. But nothing is ascertained till date.
Her two films ‘Rang’ and ‘Shatranj’ released after her death and turned out to be hits. She had left 20% of the film ‘Laadla’ unfinished and was hence was re-shot with Sridevi. She was signed for films like ‘Mohra’ and ‘Vijaypath’ and had to be replaced by Raveena Tandon and Tabu. A promise of a great life and career ended abruptly.
